Ask anyone what the worst thing about summer is, and I bet you the answer most uttered is mosquitoes. Those biting, itchy pests put a damper on everything from hikes to barbecues to simply walking your dog outside.

And if you think where you live is a favorite breeding ground of mosquitoes, you might not be alone. Pest control company Orkin just released its Top 50 Mosquito Cities list, ranking areas by the number of mosquito customers served from April 1, 2018, to March 31, 2019.

For the sixth year in a row, Atlanta, Georgia won the unwanted crown. The list also welcomed 11 new cities, including Denver; Burlington, New York; Milwaukee; Cincinnati; Greensboro, North Carolina; Savannah, Georgia; Jacksonville, Florida; Baton Rouge; Amarillo, Texas; Madison, Wisconsin and Charleston, South Carolina.

“Mosquitoes are more than annoying; they can be a major health threat,” Orkin entomologist Dr. Mark Beavers said in a statement. “Mosquito-borne diseases such as West Nile virus, encephalitides, dengue, chikungunya and for those who may remember, Zika, threaten the safety of humans and pets.”

Orkin recommends eliminating breeding-friendly conditions like standing water, wearing loose long-sleeved shirts and pants, and eliminating entry points in your home to curb mosquitoes.
