G-A sophomore Wyatt Binkley won a sectional wrestling title last week to advance to the District 3-AAA Championships.

Greencastle-Antrim High School sophomore Wyatt Binkley has claimed a sectional title in his first varsity wrestling season, earning a berth into the District 3-AAA Championships. Teammate Cody Carbaugh will also be in action at districts after a runner-up finish at sectionals.

Binkley and Carbaugh were the two Blue Devil grapplers to emerge from the Class AAA sectional tournament held Saturday at Mechanicsburg High School. G-A's Jared Starliper was the other Devil to flirt with qualifying for districts before bowing out in the second round of consolations. Stefaun Johnson, Elias Gomez and Geoff Helfrick also competed for G-A in post season tournament.

Binkley entered the 106 pound weight class and used just 1:49 in the quarterfinal round to pin his opponent and advance to the semifinals. The 10th-grader was efficient in the semis, delivering a 4-0 decision to grab a spot in the championship bout in his first time in the high school postseason arena. Binkley finished off the title run with flare by jumping to a 5-1 lead on his Cumberland Valley opponent in the finals and riding it to a 8-2 championship.

Carbaugh, a senior, worked to make it to another district tournament by working to pins in his quarterfinal and semifinal matches. That earned him the chance at a Chambersburg opponent in search of a sectional title. The Blue Devil had to settle for runner-up honors as the Trojan prevailed, but still advancing to the district fray.

As a team the performance of Binkley and Carbaugh helped G-A to a ninth-place finish with 38 points. Cumberland Valley won the section with 159.

Pairings for the District 3-AAA Tournament to be held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22 and 23, at Hersheypark Arena, have been released. Binkley, who goes in with a 23-5 record, will open with a match against Evan Bogdan of Palmya, a junior with a 28-6 season mark. Carbaugh will face Lake Laughman of New Oxford in the opening round. Laughman is 24-8. Wrestling begins at 10 a.m. Friday.
