CLASS 3A

(4 teams advance to PIAA tournament)

FIRST ROUND

(1) Greencastle-Antrim 8, (16) Cocalico 1: It was a dominating start for the No. 1 seed.

Greencastle-Antrim, the top seed in class 3A, rolled to a dominant 8-1 win over Coalico in the first round of the District 3 tournament.

The Blue Devils got off to a hot start, scoring three times in the first 15 minutes. Courtney Andruczk and Hayley Noblit led the way, each recording a hat trick.

“They came out and just said ‘we have to be first to the ball, we have to just crash the goal, keep crashing,’” assistant coach Toby Henson said. “And that's what the team has been working on all season.”

After rolling through much of the season, Greencastle had to survive two 1-0 wins to end the regular season. Henson hopes that prepared them for the postseason.

“I think it made the girls a little humbled,” Henson said. “It allowed them to see that it's anybody's game, especially through districts. We lose, we’re out. That happened to us last year against Lampeter-Strasburg. And it was deflating, so we don't want that to happen again this year. Hopefully the girls are strong and we'll keep going.”

Greencastle-Antrim will wait and see if a rematch with Lampeter-Strasburg is in the cards for round two.

(9) Solanco 2, (8) Lampeter-Strasburg 1

(4) Mechanicsburg 6, (13) West York 0: The Bulldogs saw their season come to an end at the hands of the Wildcats in a shutout loss. Mechanicsburg led 5-0 at the half and were led by Halle Engle's three goals. Mia Loran added a pair of goals. West York finishes the season with a record of 11-6-0. The Wildcats will host Northern in a quarterfinal match on Thursday.

(5) Northern York 5, (12) Manheim Central 2

(2) Elco 6, (15) Susquehannock 0: Elco led 1-0 just over a minute into the game, then added three more goals in the first half to build a 4-0 lead in their victory over Susquehannock in the first round of the District 3 Class 3A tournament. Kailey Eckhart tallied the first goal and added a pair of assists to lead the Raiders. Teammates Carley Kleinfelter and Abigail Sargent each scored twice in the victory. Elco, the No. 2 seed, will face No. 7 seed Daniel Boone on Thursday.

(7) Daniel Boone 5, (10) Palmyra 4: Daniel Boone held a 5-1 lead with less than 20 minutes to play before the Cougars mounted a rally that ultimately fell short in the opening round of the District 3 Class 3A tournament. Maddie Julian scored three goals for Palmyra in the loss. The Cougars season ends at 9-8-1.

(3) Gettysburg 2, (14) Conrad Weiser 0: Gettysburg advanced to the quarterfinals of the District 3 Class 3A tournament with a 2-0 shutout of Conrad Weiser. Maddy Gaydon and Autumn Oaster scored for the No. 3 seeded Warriors while Lydia Floreck made three saves to preserve the shutout. Gettysburg (13-3-2) will play host to Red Land on Thursday with the winner advancing to the semifinals and qualifying for the PIAA tournament.

SEMIFINALS, MONDAY, NOV. 1

(4) Mechanicsburg 2, (1) Greencastle-Antrim 1: Looking at. the stat sheet, it looks like a game that Greencastle dominated. But Mechanicsburg was more opportunistic, leading to an upset win. Mechanicsburg got an early goal six minutes in, but from that point on, it was all Greencastle. Chance after chance, but nothing was falling. That was until there were 15 minutes left, when Abby Parks went coast to coast, finding the corner of the goal. But Mechanicsburg answered a few minutes later, taking the lead that it would hold onto. Greencastle held a 28-4 shot advantage but it wasn't enough.

Zuri Crumpton heads the ball away from Kailey Eckhart during a District 3 Class 3A semifinal game played at Cedar Crest on Nov. 1, 2021 in which Elco won, 3-1, on penalty kicks.

The Raiders will meet No. 4 seed Mechanicsburg after the Wildcats knocked off top-seed Greencastle-Antrim in the other semifinal. Elco most recently won the Class 2A championship in 2019 and is 3-3 all-time in championship matches. They have never faced Mechanicsburg in postseason play. The Raiders enter Thursday's contest at 16-3.
