Jayden Daniels transfer reaction: Arizona State football 'a mess' under coach Herm Edwards

The reaction to the news that Arizona State football quarterback Jayden Daniels intended to enter the transfer portal and leave ASU on Thursday was swift.

And it was hard on coach Herm Edwards and the state of the ASU football program.

Several national college football writers slammed the state of the Sun Devils' program under Edwards and continued to wonder why the coach is still employed in Tempe.

CBS Sports' Barrett Sallee called the Sun Devils "a mess."

He wrote: "Edwards was supposed to bring the Sun Devils back into prominence, but he has driven them straight into the ground instead. The combination of Daniels' departure, the NCAA investigation and a pared-down coaching staff is going to make it hard to take the program seriously under Edwards' watch.  That wasn't supposed to be the case. He was supposed to come in and install a more NFL-style approach to college football. His star power as a former NFL coach and prominent television analyst was supposed to draw in prospects who not only have professional aspirations, but are excited about the discipline and structure that his program was intended to create. Instead, Edwards' program has become a punchline in the Pac-12 South -- a division that isn't exactly a gauntlet."

Others slammed the program on social media and called for his firing.

ASU went 8-5 overall last season, but has been embroiled in an NCAA investigation into recruiting violations that has resulted in the ousting of several assistant coaches, but not yet in the dismissal of the head coach, Edwards.

Many fans have been calling for Edwards to be fired for months, and Daniels' departure just seemed to add fuel to their fire.
