Greencastle-Antrim athletes finish fall campaigns

Senior Daulton Monn finished his Blue Devil cross country career at the state championships.

Greencastle-Antrim athletic teams wrapped up the fall season last week with some appearances on the district and state stage.

Senior Daulton Monn completed his high school cross country career at the pinnacle event of his sport. He finished in the top half of the PIAA Class AA Championship race. The harrier completed the course in 17:56, good for 109th place. The finish was in the top half, as 228 runners participated. Vinny Todaro of Big Spring won the race in 16 minutes flat.

Boys' soccer

The Greencastle-Antrim boys' soccer teams came up short Saturday night in its efforts to qualify for state competition.

The Blue Devil booters took on Pequea Valley in a battle for third place in the District 3-AA bracket. The top three teams advance to the state tournament. G-A delivered three goals in the effort, taking a 3-2 lead on a pair of scores from Steven McFetridge and one from Jesse Beeler. Ryan Burgess had an assist.

However Pequea Valley put in three unanswered goals to claim a spot in states.

Pequa led in shots (20-6) and corner kicks (6-3). Josh Ehko had 15 saves in goal for the Devils.

Despite a statistical mismatch, the Devils were only edged 1-0 in the semi by defending champion Lancaster Mennonite. Lancaster led in shots (24-3) and corner kicks (5-1). Tulpehocken defeated Lancaster Mennonite for the district title by a 1-0 score.

G-A finishes its 2012 campaign at 15-7, making history as the first time the program has advanced to the district semifinals.

Volleyball

The Blue Devil netters ran into a tough Brandywine Heights squad in the District 3-AA quarterfinals, dropping a 3-0 match. The scores were 25-13, 25-23 and 25-22.

Nakita Gearhart led in several statistical categories with 13 kills, eight blocks and 16 digs. Morgynn McKenzie added nine kills and put up 14 digs. Chloe Hoover contributed six kills, six blocks, five service points and two aces. Gabbie Hissong chalked up five kills and seven digs. Erin Koons was high in assists with 13 and Claudia Hissong led in service points with nine.

Football

Greencastle-Antrim's varsity football team defeated James Buchanan 62-7 Monday evening to finish at 5-5 on the season and 4-3 in the Mid-Penn Conference Colonial Division. The final game was delayed several days since James Buchanan missed four days of schools because of Hurricane Sandy.

The Blue Devils opened the scoring and discounted a special teams score from the Rockets by opening a 34-7 halftime lead. The running clock was engaged early in the third period and G-A rode out on a high note to close the season. G-A outgained the JB offense 467 to 60 yards.

Hunter Szaflarski had a career out on which to go out on with four touchdowns and a 123 yard rushing game. Five other Devils crossed the goal line for TDs, including Ashtin Byers, Josh Young, Kareem Aiken, Matt Montedoro and Matt Oberholzer. Luke Bitner delivered eight extra point kicks. Young was just short of the century rushing mark with 99 yards.
