Greencastle-Antrim experienced each kind of result of competition during action last week on the girls’ soccer field. After starting the week with a 3-0 demolition of rival James Buchanan, the Blue Devils saw a penalty kick make the difference in a 3-2 loss to Gettysburg. To top off the week the short-handed Devils withstood Big Spring for a 1-0 victory.

The Blue Devils dominated the Rockets, but it didn’t show on the scoreboard until the final half of play. Sharon Juarez scored early on a Nikki Garns assist for her 10th goal of the season, but the Devils didn’t net the ball again until twice in the final 20 minutes. Jane Herman pounded goal off the goalie into the net and Heather Sanders connected for 40 yards out for the third goal. G-A led in shots, 16-4, and in corners, 6-2.

Gettysburg came to town, also with just one loss, but the Blue Devils didn’t seem to be affected as they took a 2-1 lead into the second half. Juarez connected for number 11 and Herman also scored to bring G-A from down 1-0. Gettysburg switched to a different gear in the final 20 minutes, netting the tying goal. It looked like overtime was coming before G-A was whistled for a handball with just over a minute on the clock. Gettysburg made the penalty kick to complete the come-from-behind victory. The Warriors had the edge in shots, 8-7, and a much wider margin in corners at 7-1. Alex Baughman had five saves for the Devils.

G-A lifted its record to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the Colonial Division with a 1-0 win over Big Spring. Heather Sanders scored late in the first half for what would end up as the lone score of the game and the game-winner.
