Senior Tyler Szaflarski hovers on defense in the James Buchanan contest.

The Blue Devils (8-7. 5-3 MPC-Colonial) put an end to a six-game skid Tuesday by besting Northern (58-38) on the home floor before upping its playoff stock with a road win over Class AAAA Carlisle (43-37) and then besting rival James Buchanan (62-44) while in Rocket territory.

Lauren Grove jump started the Devils against Northern with the first seven points of the game. Defense carried the rest of the half for G-A and kept the ball out of the Polar Bears’ hands for the most part while pushing to a 30-16 halftime lead. Northern found a little fire in the third and kept pace with the home-standing Devils, but never made a dent in the lead. G-A, however, made a final move in the fourth to complete the 58-38 victory. Grove ended up with 19 points to lead all scorers. Rachel Kline added 13.

G-A took the momentum into Carlisle and knocked off the big school by six points. Tache Smothers and Chloe Hoover combined for 35 of the Devils’ 43 points. Smothers held up the Devils in clutch time with a 7-for-8 performance at the free throw line in the final period. She ended up with 19 points and Hoover put in 16. Kline controlled the boards with 15 rebounds and Grove had a dozen.

Turns out Smothers was just warming up. The senior point guard deposited 16 points during Friday’s 62-44 win over James Buchanan that pushed the Devils above .500 again. A 37-23 advantage at the half dwindled a bit as G-A’s offense hit a dry spell, but it revved up again in the fourth to turn the 19-point victory. Smother led three players in double digit scoring. Hoover put in 14 and Grove had 12. Hoover pulled nine rebounds.

In junior varsity action, G-A outdid Northern 46-29 behind 18 points from Jane Herman and 16 points from Ashlynn Schaeffer. The Devils then prevailed over Carlisle 44-33 behind 11 points from Herman and 10 from Abbey Pool. G-A made it three for the week with a 36-21 win. Herman and Schaeffer each put in 11 points in the win.

It wasn’t always easy last week, but the Blue Devils (14-0, 8-0 MPC-Colonial) remained unbeaten on the season, improving to 14-0. Northern put up a fight in a 59-53 final and rival James Buchanan always charges up the gym before G-A settled it by a 72-49 margin.

Northern had G-A battling from behind for a good part of the night. Seniors Corey Meyers and Denver Cordell took matters into their own hands in the third. Meyers started with seven straight points and Cordell delivered eight consecutive to position the Devils better for the fourth quarter. The Polar Bears were tenacious, but the Devils were out to keep their unblemished record in tact. G-A fended off a final effort from Northern for the six-point win. Cordell used five three-pointers en route to his game-high 24 points. Meyers, Denton Cordell and Joel Zola each added nine points.

The James Buchanan game was never in doubt and yet the fans were treated to much of the usual taste of rivalry that comes into the gym when these two teams play. Key to the Blue Devils’ play was 15 (four by Joel Zola) steals that most of the time translated to points. Zach Faulkner led the offense with 18 points. Denton Cordell put in 12 and Gabe Fridgen made an impact with 11. Denver Cordell also made it to double figures with 10 points. Denton Cordell added four assists and seven rebounds.

In junior varsity scores, G-A (0-5, 0-5 MPC-Colonial) dropped its game to Northern 47-39, but recovered to bounced Buchanan 53-47. Holden Baker scored 26 points in the win.

Similar battles continued for the Blue Devil wrestling team last week in a 66-15 loss to Shippensburg. G-A put nine wrestlers on the mat, but came up with just three wins. That combined with the bonus points Shippensburg produced and the lopsided score remained.

Cody Carbaugh continued a fine season with a second-period pin in the 106 pound weight class. Wade Rider added another pin at 113 for the Devils. Earlier in the match Jake Heuer produced an 11-6 decision at 132.
