The Greencastle-Antrim volleyball team didn’t get off on the right foot Monday night in the opening round of District 3-AAA play. In the end the Blue Devils never did get sturdy enough to rebound and were eliminated from the tournament.

Lancaster Mennonite took advantage of the Devils’ slow start with a 25-13 win in the opening set. Down a game, G-A summoned its usual brand of play and staged a comeback from being down by five in the second set. Nakita Gearhart engineered the way from the service line and Amanda Hammer put down three kills as the Devils took a 15-14 lead.

The battle was now on and it would be neck-and-neck for the duration. The Blazers worked to a 22-19 lead, but again the Devils came back to within a set point at 24-23. The seesaw game ended up with Lancaster Mennonite taking a 30-28 victory. The Blazers prevailed in set three by a 25-19 margin.

Hammer delivered 10 kills on the match and Gearhart banged down seven. Lauren Verhoef was in for six. Alex Baughman produced 12 set assists and nine digs. Ema Bobbitt had 17 digs and two aces.

G-A completed the season at 12-7.
