Schemel, Stouffer head for states

A big meet on a tough course didn’t daunt Greencastle-Antrim’s group of young runners last week during the District 3-AAA Championships. Two freshmen will be heading for the state meet as a result of their performances at Hershey’s Parkview course.
Caroline Schemel and Shelby Stouffer will be headed back to the Parkview course Saturday for the PIAA State Championship meet after finishing 10th and 31st in the district event.
Schemel showed she belonged among the elite in the district with the top-10 finish that earned her a district medal and the state berth. Her time of 19:45 was within 20 seconds of the five in front of her. The winning time was 18:52.
Stouffer was awarded the state berth with her time of 20:25. The top five teams advance to states along with the top 25 runners not on one of those teams. Her 31st spot was just one outside of the medals.
G-A’s Mid-Penn Conference Capital Division champion girls’ team was solid with just the minimum of five runners in the district race, finishing 19th out of 46 teams. Alana Ebbitt was 61st in 21:00. Lauren Powers was 191st in 22:33. Caitlyn Hetrick was 257th in 23:38.
For the Blue Devil boys, Daulton Monn was just seconds from a state berth of his own. He was 45th with a time of 17:25.
With just four competitors, G-A did not field a boys’ team score. Ben Hockman was 300th in 19:36. Coby Salmon was 316th in 19:49. Zach Husband was 320th in 19:52.
