G-AMS field hockey teams post strong finish

The Greencastle-Antrim Middle School field hockey teams finished the season strongly in the final two weeks of play.

The eighth-grade team dominated Waynesboro 6-0 Oct. 17 with a hat trick of three goals from Deirdre Conway and single goals from Isabelle Waddelow, Emily Bland and Annie Powers. G-A made 18 shots on goal and earned four penalty corners. Rachael Marconi, Morgan Clopper, Jean Hart and Lauren Cole banged the cage with goals for the seventh-grade square in a 4-0 shutout of Waynesboro. G-A held a 4-1 edge in corners and had four shots on goal.

Gettysburg edged the eighth-grade Blue Devils 1-0 with a goal 81 seconds prior to the final buzzer. G-A played solid defense as the Warriors had 11 corners. The Devils earned two corners. Jillian Barr had three saves for G-A. Gettysburg also pulled off a 1-0 win in the seventh-grade contest. G-A trailed in corners, 3-1 and Barr added 3 saves.

On Wednesday, Oct. 19 G-A entertained Faust and the teams played to a 2-2 stalemate. Conway scored both Blue Devil goals in the first half. G-A had eight corners, two shots on goal and Barr collected two goalie saves. In the seventh-grade game it again was a tie at 0-0. The Little Devils held the advantage in corners at 5-0 with two shots on goal and Barr with five saves.

The next day Waynesboro came to town and G-A was the ungracious host, pinning a 9-0 loss on the Maidens. Powers went double hat trick in this one with six goals. She had assists from Lauren Cole and Bland. Other G-A scorers were Kylie Carbaugh and with two, Conway. Barr had five saves. Jean Hart had four goals, Abbey Reitz two and Cole with one in the seventh-grade 7-0 win.

Oct. 24 brought a trip to Newville to take on Big Spring. The eighth-grade Devils edged the Bulldogs 2-1. Powers scored both goals. The G-A win came despite an 11-3 advantage by Big Spring in corners. Barr had a monster day with 17 goalie saves. In the seventh-grade game, Cole and Elliott each had a goal and an assist. Clopper and Hart accounted for the other scores.

To close the season Oct. 26 G-A hosted Shippensburg and blanked the Hounds 2-0. Powers and Conway found the goal for the Devils, who led in corners 4-2 and had four shots on goal. Barr had four saves. G-A dominated with a 5-2 win in the final seventh-grade game. Jean Hart recorded her hat trick in this game. Cole had a goal and two assists. Lexi Sibbio had two assists. Marconi also scored. The Devils had seven shots on goal and two corners and didn’t allow any from Ship. Barr had two saves.

The eighth-grade team ended with an 8-6-1 record and the seventh-grade squad finished at 7-3-3.
