Greencastle-Antrim athletes prepare for district competition
The postseason has arrived for several Greencastle-Antrim athletic teams.
Championship tournament have been finalized in field hockey and soccer. The cross country district event will be run Wednesday and volleyball postseason action is set to begin Monday, Oct. 31.
First to get into the fray will be the soccer team and the Blue Devils will get to open play in familiar surroundings. G-A goes into the District 3-AA Tournament as the 16th seed and will have to fend off a challenge from 17th seeded Oley Valley for a spot in the 16-team first round bracket. The play-in game will be played at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24 on Kaley Field. The winner will face top seeded Gettysburg in the first round Wednesday, Oct. 26. The Warriors are no stranger to the Devils. The teams are both in the Mid-Penn Conference Colonial Division which Gettysburg won in undefeated style.
The G-A field hockey team landed in the 10th spot on the District 3-AA power rankings with its 12-4 record and earning a spot in the first round. The Blue Devils will take on sixth-seeded Biglerville (15-2). The teams will travel to Northeastern York High School in Manchester to play a 6 p.m. game. The high school is located at 300 High St. A win would make the Devils’ next opponent Palmyra, Tulpehocken or Milton Hershey in the quarterfinals.
The Parkview course behind the Giant Center in Hershey Wednesday, Oct. 26 is the scene of the District 3 Cross Country Championships where runners will be reaching for a qualification in the state meet. G-A competes in the Class AAA races with the girls scheduled at 2 p.m. and the boys at 4 p.m.
District play for volleyball starts Monday, Oct. 31 for the Blue Devils. Bracket information, site and times have not yet been determined.
All District 3 play-in games and the first several rounds of play will have admission of $5 for adults and $3 for students (K-12). No passes will be accepted at these games, including any home contests. District 3 does not allow signs, banners, or noise makers at these events.
As a result of hosting the play-in soccer game, Greencastle-Antrim has moved up the time of the junior varsity football game scheduled with Northern Monday, Oct. 24. It will be played at 4 p.m. on Kaley Field.
