G-A netters had rollercoaster week

A rollercoaster week for the Greencastle-Antrim volleyball team ended at the annual Dig Pink event in Chambersburg. In between were some tough matches, but a couple that included hard-fought wins over rivals.

Gettysburg upset the Blue Devils (6-4, 6-2 Mid-Penn Conference-Capital) in straight games of 25-23, 25-21 and 25-16 to start the week. Team-high statistics were recorded by: Amanda Hammer, 10 kills; Alex Baughman, 13 digs; Tiffany Briggs, 26 assists. Tabitha Rudy added 10 digs and Lauren Verhoef had five kills.

G-A bounced back to hammer Waynesboro Tuesday and James Buchanan on Wednesday to brighten the week. The Devils swept the Maidens in three with scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 25-13.  Ema Bobbitt led a 15-ace performance from G-A with seven. Hammer again delivered at the net with seven kills. Verhoef added five kills, along with five blocks and four digs. Bobbitt topped the team in digs with 18. Briggs rang up 23 assists.

Buchanan battled well to force four games, but G-A prevailed with a 25-16 definitive set. The Devils looked unstoppable with set wins of 25-13 and 25-9 to open the match before the Rockets surged. JB took the third game 29-27. Verhoef went double digits in the attack with 16 kills. Morygynn McKenzie shined with 12 kills, nine digs and five aces. Briggs was quite busy with 35 set assists and seven digs.

Chambersburg proved their 9-1 record by dispatching the Devils 3-0 in games of 25-18, 25-12 and 25-23. Verhoef chalked up six kills and nine blocks. Nakita Gearhart was back in action after injury sidelined her for several weeks. She delivered five kills. Baughman and Bobbitt had six digs each. Briggs registered 15 assists.

The junior varsity Blue Devils split their matches on the week with a straight sets win over Waynesboro (25-21, 25-19) and a 2-1 win over James Buchanan (26-24, 16-25, 15-9). Courtney Stump had seven kills against Waynesboro and four more in the JB match. Claudia Hissong put up 17 assists in the Waynesboro match and Abbey Pool added six kills. Against JB, Katie Gelsinger recorded five kills. Stump and Bailey Hopkins had a dozen digs each. Erin Koons contributed three assists.

The Gettysburg (17-25, 16-25) and Chambersburg (17-25, 22-25) matches were 2-0 setbacks. Hopkins pushed up 13 digs, Hissong had nine assists and Gelsinger put down five kills against Chambersburg. In the Gettysburg match, Hopkins added another 12 digs. Hissong chipped in seven assists and Stump had five kills.
