Greencastle-Antrim took advantage of three West Perry turnovers to control a Mid-Penn Conference Colonial Division matchup Friday night and collected a 32-21 win.

The defending division champion Blue Devils (2-2, 1-0 MPC-Colonial) stayed tenacious and consistent throughout the contest and held off the Mustangs in the end. Three times the Devils converted takeaways into points.

Denver Cordell opened a marquee night where he would surpass 200 yards rushing by taking a pass 11 yards for the score. West Perry answered and it looked like it may be a tie ballgame at the half, but the Devils engineered a drive for a  14-7 lead when the break came. Tyler Szaflarski converted a key fourth-and-one on the drive and quarterback Austin Scott finished it off.

That momentum carried, or at least Cordell made it so by picking off a pass of the Mustang’s opening drive of the second half. Scott completed the drive with a 21 yard run. Szaflarski was called on to run for a two-point conversion and was successful for a 22-7 advantage.

G-A looked to put the game away in the fourth. While a touchdown was denied on the first drive, Luke Bitner (who was perfect on extra points for the night) did put in a field goal from 29 yards out. West Perry went for the quick strike and scored on a 60-yard pass play to keep the Blue Devil faithful on the edge on their seats. But G-A’s offensive line continue to control and Cordell was more than willing to provide more fire power. He ripped off a 29-yard run and got a 12-yard contribution from teammate Szaflarski before finishing it for a 38-yard touchdown run. West Perry had one more score in them, but it was too late to make a difference.

Cordell ran for 208 yards on 19 carries. Szaflarski was just short of 100 with 98 yards. Grant Murray had G-A’s other interception and Ryan Hickey recovered a fumble. Ian Spencer end the tackling corps with nine and Szaflarski had either. Hickey and Gabe Fridgen each contributed six.

With a huge fourth quarter surge the junior varsity Blue Devils also triumped over West Perry by a 30-14 margin.

Matt Montedoro’s one-yard run in the first quarter and a two-point conversion run by Hunter Szaflarski gave G-A an 8-0 lead. The Little Mustang answered in the second and the Devils didn’t get back on the board until the fourth quarter. But when they got on track offensively it was plentiful.

Szaflarski had a pair of long runs to the endzone called back by penalties, but the offense racked up three scores in the final nine minutes to clinch the game. Devin Statler toted the ball 42 yards for a score and Motedoro converted another one-yard plunge over the line. Ashtin Byers iced it with a 30-yard run. Montedoro passed to Cameron Chilcote twice for two-point conversions.

Montedoro was 7-for-10 for 75 yards passing to five different targets. Josh Young pulled in two for 37 yards. Statler led the rushing crew with 86 yards on 10 carries. Kareen Aiken added 69 yards and Byers chalked up 58 yards. Defensively, Kristian Sheeley racked up a dozen tackles. Chilcote and Josh Green each  had an interception. Montedoro recovered a fumble.

Blue Devils Connor Shank (54) and Jared Starliper (56) converge to make a tackle in the G-A middle school game with West Perry.
