Devil stickwomen bring home tournament trophy
Greencastle-Antrim invaded Gettysburg Saturday and came away with the victory and a trophy to boot.
The Blue Devils varsity field hockey team captured the Gettysburg Tournament with a 6-0 blanking of East Pennsboro and a 4-3 win over host Gettysburg in the championship.
The Warriors took a quick 2-0 lead in the title game, however the Devils regrouped and answered on goals from Ashton Rockwell and Danae Timmons. G-A took the lead on Brooke Strait’s goal with 12:21 left in the half before Gettysburg tied it. Jenna Lehman’s goal with 2:14 left in the half ended up the difference in the 4-3 win. Sarah Gipe broke with the ball on the right side of the field and pushed it to Lehman, who banged it home.
“Gettysburg played very aggressively throughout the game,” remarked G-A head coach Jen Everetts. “Our team confidently tied the game and continued on the attack for the remaining minutes in the first half. The second half was about survival.”
The Devils made good on each shot on goal and executed six penalty corners. Goal keeper Emiley Maiorana made 11 saves.
Timmons had two goals and Sarah Gipe had a goal and two assists in the shutout of East Penn. Kourtney Gipe, Tache Smothers and Kasey Sweitzer each also scored and Lehman inked an assist.
Everetts said, “I’m proud of how our passing game has developed this quickly into the season. The team moved the ball well today, creating many opportunities to score.”
G-A had 16 shots on goal and 19 corners in the contest. Maiorana had to make just four saves.
The Blue Devils junior varsity team had to settle for runner-up honors after coming out on the short end of a 1-0 skirmish that went to double overtime with Gettysburg in the jayvee tournament.
