G-A hoops teams open season in county mixer
A matchup of Franklin County teams got the winter season off to a start last weekend in a tip-off basketball tournament held at the Chambersburg Area Senior High School. For Greencastle-Antrim’s part the girls’ and boys’ teams matched records, losing and winning against teams from the same schools.
Host Chambersburg was the opponent for both Blue Devil teams to open the event. The boys lost to the Trojans, 66-39. Chambersburg jumped out early and held tight to the lead. Denver Cordell led the Devil scoring with 12 points, supported by Tylar Szaflarski, who inserted seven. Similar circumstances prevailed as the G-A girls battled Chambersburg to a 58-32 setback. The Trojans caught the lead in the second half and then kept the Blue Devils at bay. Jenna Crunkleton led the Devils with nine points. Lauren Grove added seven.
Both teams bounced back well to claim third place in the tourney. The boys’ team trimmed Waynesboro, 49-23. Zachary Fualkner topped all scorers with 13 points. Seth Sprague added a dozen and Cordell put in seven. The girls’ team matched the boys’ team but by a much more narrow margin, topping the Maidens 53-46. Tache Smothers delivered a game-high 18 points. Caitlyn Hoover contributed 10 points and neared a double-double with nine rebounds.
