Legion team wins county, eliminated in regional
The hot streak that served up the Greencastle American Legion Post 373 baseball team the Franklin County title last week cooled off over the weekend in the Regional AL Tournament.
Greencastle’s season ended at 16-7 when it dropped two straight games and was eliminated from advancing in the regional competition.
Greencastle last won the Franklin County American Legion Baseball League in 2001 and before that it was 1990. Post 373 finished the regular season with 11 wins to take the title. After not fielding a team in 2009, Greencastle won the 2010 crown with 32 points, above Fayetteville’s 28.
The local team came as close as you can get in the weekend games to advancing in the postseason. The regional featured eight teams.
Enola took a 2-0 lead in the opening frame, but Post 373 tied it in the top of the fourth. Enola won 3-2 with an RBI-single in the sixth. Despite the nine-inning setup, Greencastle couldn’t push across leaving runners in scoring position in four different frames.
A day earlier Greencastle fell 6-5 to host Hanover. Riding a 3-0 advantage through four innings, Post 373 saw Hanover ink two runs in each the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Greencastle rallied for two in the top of the ninth frame but came up short.
In the elimination game Dylan Schaeffer (6-1) settled in, scattering seven hits. Greencastle left runners on in the fourth, seven, eighth and ninth frames. Schaeffer helped his cause with an RBI and Adam Moore drove in the other run with a single. Josh Short doubled in the game and went 3-for-4. Cody Ezolt was 2-for-4 at the plate.
Ezolt and Jared Grove (double) got the scoring going in the regional opener. Greencastle managed 12 hits to outhit Hanover, but didn’t put them together to mount another rally. Solo home runs from Eric Schanzenbacher and Ezolt put two on the board in the top of the ninth to make it close. Grove had two doubles in the game and Schaeffer added a two-bagger.
Greencastle had secured the legion title by capping the 11-game win streak with two over McConnellsburg, 4-2 and 7-2 in eight innings. Schanzenbacher, Short and Zeger knocked in runs for Post 373 in the opener. The second game went eight before Greencastle exploded for five runs. After two errors and a passed ball got Post 373 the lead, Tyler Szaflarski, Zeger (2-for-5) and Patrick Hudson (winning pitcher) each drove in runs during the outburst.
Post 373 got into first place in the league with wins over Dry Run last week. In a 10-0 shutout Ezolt was 3-for-3 with a homer, double and three RBIs. J.T. Root pitched a two-hitter. Greencastle beat Dry Run Tuesday, 12-4. Devin Schaeffer limited the McConnellsburg bats to two hits in the six innings played and helped his cause with a 2-for-4 plate appearance with two RBIs. Short, Schaeffer, Grove (2-for-3), Schanzenbacher (3-for-3) and Ezolt drove in key runs for Greencastle.
