Stingrays host first meet in 25 years; win double dual
The Moss Spring Sting Rays hosted their first swim meet in 25 years last weekend. The meet was held at Moss Spring Swim Club. It was a double dual meet between Moss Spring Swim Club, Fountainhead Country Club and Chambersburg Country Club, which competed at a swim meet for the first time in team history.
Eighty-nine swimmers competed, with 49 competing for the Sting Rays. The Sting Rays won both meets, improving their overall record to 4-3. The Stingrays are coached by Anthony Addlesberger and Kate Miller.
"I was so impressed with how well our kids swam,” said Addlesberger. “To be a second year program and swim the way we have been is a testament to our team's character.
“The kids have worked so hard this summer, and for us to compete at every meet and win races against kids who have been competitive swimmers for five or six years is a great feeling.”
The outdoor environment provided a different atmosphere than the cramped, indoor facilities where most meets are held. There were between 200 and 300 people at the pool, relaxing on lawn chairs and enjoying the beautiful weather, cheering and supporting the swimmers.
"Coaches and parents were coming up to us all the meet to say how happy they were that we were able to put the meet together,” added Miller.
“Many of us shared the same sentiment that this is what summer swimming is about.”
Winning races for the Stingrays were Megan Beam (25 Free 25 Back), Brady Shepherd (50 Free), Jayson Sollenberger (50 Free, 100 Free), Timi Tijani (100 IM, 50 Fly, 50 Breast), Matt Lutz (50 Back), Daniel Lutz (50 Back), and Nikki Garns (50 Breast). The 11-12 200 medley relay of Sydney Shepherd, Matt Lutz, Steph Ehko and Nathan Schaeffer were also victorious.
The Stingrays will be competing at the ISL Championships this weekend at Chambersburg YMCA.
The club will also be hosting a movie night at Moss Spring Swim Club Aug. 21. The event will be open to the community.
