Greencastle starts strong in tourney

The Greencastle-Antrim entry into the 11-12 Major District 14 Tournament of Little League Inc. has started strongly.

The team’s second win came against South Middleton Saturday by an 8-4 score in extra innings. With the score tied 4-4 after six frames, Greencastle got it started with six straight two-out hits in the seventh. Griffin Remenick and Austin Branchman each singled to start the outburst. Eugene Byers doubled to drive in both runners. That was followed by consecutive singles by Myles Gayman, Matthew Kline and Bailey Parker to set the score at 8-4.

Derek Measell, who came in the fifth for Myles Gayman, got the win on the mound. For Greencastle, Byers collected four hits. Gayman connected for three hits, while Kline and Branchman each had two hits.

Earlier in the week the local team posted a 10-0 win over Newville at Carlisle. Greencastle started early with one in the first to take the early lead and exploded for six in the third and one in the fourth to notch the 10-run win.

For Greencastle, Kline hurled a one-hit shutout, striking out seven and allowing one walk in the four-inning contest.

Offensively for Greencastle, Byers had three hits, including a pair of doubles. Kline and Branchman each had two hits, including a double.
