Blue Devil football teams claim close victories

The Greencastle-Antrim junior varsity football team hosted the Squires of Delone Catholic Monday and suffered its first loss of the season, 22-20.

The Squires got on the board first at the 1:17 mark of the first quarter. G-A blocked the kick to end the first quarter. Denver Cordell broke the plane for the Devils with a 35-yard touchdown run. Aaron Bumbaugh handled the 2 point conversion for a Devil lead.

With 4:25 left to play in the half Grant Murray's pass to Denton Cordell on fourth and five fell incomplete. A pass interference call against the Squires gave G-A a fresh set of downs to work with. With 2:45 left in the half G-A again faced a fourth down situation. This time, they had 10 yards to go for the first. Murray found Denton Cordell for a 28-yard TD completion. The Devils were unable to convert on the two-point attempt and the teams went into the half tied at 14.

G-A’s final score of the game came on a 65-yard run by Bumbaugh with 5:50 left to play in the third quarter. The Blue Devils were once again turned back on their conversion attempt. Delone scored again in the fourth quarter and were successful in their two-point conversion to put them up 22-20. G-A staged a comeback effort, but it fell short.

The Blue Devils finished the night with 291 yards of offense behind the line of Nate Hykes, Seth Izer, Joshua Horenstein, Tyler Mills and Zachary Mowen. Murray threw for 51 yards and a TD. Root had 64 yards through the air. Bumbaugh ran for 98 yards and had 30 yards receiving. Denver Cordell had 55 yards rushing. Denton Cordell finished the game with 66 receiving yards and 23 rushing yards. Keller hauled in a 19 yard pass.

Ian Spencer had 10 tackles for the defense followed by Seth Izer with seven. Mowen had six tackles for G-A. Denver Cordell and Horenstein had four apiece. Nicholas Potter, Denton Cordell and Joshua Pluta had three tackles each. Joseph Dominick and Ronald Sease each had two tackles. Jordan Koons and Potter broke up Squire pass attempts.



The Greencastle-Antrim Middle School football team finished a fine season with a 31-22 victory over West Perry last week.

The Blue Devils traded scores in the opening stanza with G-A finding the end zone after a five-minute drive. Josh Young scored from four-yards out and Stephen Ernharth toted in the two-point conversion. Tied 8-8 at the start of the second quarter, G-A got the edge as Austin Scott hit Gabe Fridgen on a 25-yard scoring strike. G-A extended the lead on a Jeffrey Seilhamer two-point conversion.

G-A took advantage of a West Perry fumble. Adam Moore completed a scoring drive with a two-yard run. Ronnie Stine ran for two to increase the Devil lead to 24-8. The teams traded interceptions before the half with the Mustangs cashing in. Just before the half, the Blue Devils scored again with Scott finding Daniel Stepler for a nine-yard pass to the end zone.

Defense took the lead in the second half. G-A had scored all its points in the first half and West Perry added a final score, but trailed to the end.

Moore was the leading rusher with 53 yards and Scott threw for 211 yards on 14-for-20 stats. Defensively with four tackles each were Josh Hohl, Nick Scaricaciotto and Cam Chilcote. Corey Staley, Moore and Ernharth added three each. Seilhamer, Zach Rodeheaver and Walker Kinsey each recovered fumbles.

G-A ended the season with an 8-1 record.
