Greencastle-Antrim looked like it never missed a beat Friday night in its football opener leaving James Buchanan in the dust 42-0.

While the cast has changed quite a bit from last season’s record-breaking team, the Blue Devils raced to a 21-0 first-quarter lead and never looked back, riding 240 rushing yards with a good mix of 149 through the air and limiting the Rockets to just 105 offensive yards.

G-A pretty much finished its business in the opening half, consuming 17:41 of the clock and running 30 times for 189 yards.

Jacob Statler had two touchdowns in the first quarter alone, with a seven yard run and a 38-yard pass from Brett Meyers. Meyers also broke the plane with a six-year run. Tyler Szaflarski, who tallied 80 yards on 11 carries for the game, took it in from one yard out in the second quarter and Statler added his third score of the game just before the half for a 35-0 tally at the break. Richard Pfannebecker scored from a yard out in the fourth to end the scoring. Nathan Pool kicked all six extra points through the uprights.

Long, consistent drives were the name of the Blue Devils’ game. Meyers was 7-for-9 in the passing department. Statler made two of the catches for 71 yards and Josh Short dove for a 27 yarder that set up the fourth score. Szaflarksi had two catches for 23 yards. Denver Cordell had a catch for 15 and Devin Schaeffer one for 13.

On the ground, following Szaflarski was Schaeffer with 58 yards on 13 totes. Brandon Trefelner carried three times for 32 yards. Statler and Cordell each had 21 yards.

Pfannebecker had a key fumble recovery in the first quarter, setting up G-A’s third score.

G-A entertains West Perry Friday with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

Devin Schaeffer puts a stiff arm on a Rocket defender Friday on Kaley Field.
