EDITORIAL: Let’s keep the shine on the our playground

Our current economic atmosphere certainly doesn’t appear to be even close to a good time for public fundraising campaigns. And yet the Greencastle-Antrim community has its share of fundraising efforts underway. The worst part is they are all for a good cause. There’s the library and the G-A MAAX campaign. Despite hard times both appear to be doing OK, slowly working toward that goal.

There’s another entity in our community that needs help from all of us — the Jerome R. King Playground. The playground has served Greencastle-Antrim as a unique presence in the center of our community for nearly a century. Unfortunately, it seems that at times the playground is overlooked. That’s how it is with things that are reliable and constantly serving. We just expect that it will always be there. But that doesn’t happen on its own.

A small group of volunteers keeps the playground going and they need our support both physically and financially. The annual spring cleanup day at the playground will be held from 8 a.m. to noon this Saturday, May 5. As many hands as possible would make the job go so much quicker and probably make it more like fun than work. So come and join in the spruce-up. You are bound to be using the playground at some time this summer so think of it as cleaning house. Let’s also make sure we put our best foot forward for out-of-town guests with a tidy recreational area.

If you are unable to help with the cleanup, there is another alternative for your support. The playground board is in the midst of its annual Fund Drive and all support is very much needed.

As the fundraising letter from the playground board states:

“Each year we strive to make improvements to our facilities and play equipment and explore ways to enhance the park for the public’s enjoyment. It does require a substantial financial commitment, and also many hours of volunteer labor, to keep the playground beautiful and clean, making it a pleasant and safe place for all to play and visit. Each year we rely solely on your generous financial support to maintain the park as an asset for community recreation and enjoyment...Through your continued financial support we can ensure many more years of the rich tradition we have all come to know as the Jerome R. King Playground.”

Donations to the playground are tax deductible and can be sent to P.O. Box 2, Greencastle, PA 17225.

The playground has a website for more information at www.kingplayground.zoomshare.com

Please find a way to lend your support to the playground  — use your hands to write a check or come between 8 and noon and help with the spring cleaning. Let’s keep the shine on this jewel of the Greencastle-Antrim community.
