EDITORIAL: Ball is rolling

The ball is now rolling well in the effort to bring a school resource officer into the Greencastle-Antrim School District.

On Aug. 3 the Greencastle Borough Council took the lead in pushing forward the idea of a shared effort among the borough, school district and Antrim Township to create the position. The school board and board of supervisors are expected to consider the idea in their public sessions later this month.

Greencastle already provides police coverage to the school campus. A grant may or may not come through to help fund such a position. Of course it’s a tough time with budgets, but we hope that grant or no grant all three entities can come to a funding agreement that can get that officer into the schools.

Cooperation is the key here and it looks like the representatives at a joint meet were of like mind in the need for the officer. It’s an idea that should pay dividends to the Greencastle-Antrim community for years to come.

The borough has taken the lead in forwarding the idea. Let’s hope the school board and township supervisors keep the ball rolling.
