Greencastle-Antrim High School junior Nathan Kirkwood was introduced to the school board as the newest student representative at Thursday evening's meeting.

"He has quite a mentor sitting next to him," Dr. Ed Rife, G-A High School principal, said.

Nathan's sister, Madi, a G-AHS senior, is the other student representative, a position she has held since last year. They are the children of Todd and Deena Kirkwood.

Nathan was one of four juniors who ran for the position and was elected before schools were closed in March due to COVID-19.

"It's a chance to give the student body a voice ... I think that's important," said Nathan, who has an interest in politics and decision-making.

"I saw her (Madi) use the opportunity and it helped me understand the importance of it," he continued.

At G-AHS, Nathan is a Peer Leader, student council member and Peer Tutor. He is kicker for the Blue Devils football team and is also a member of the soccer team and track and field squad.

He wants to attend the U.S. Naval Academy or U.S. Air Force Academy and become a pilot.

The meeting in the high school library was attended in person by some board members and administrators and via Zoom by others. The meeting was livestreamed for the public and can be viewed on the district website:
