Old Home Week is quickly approaching

The clock is ticking and two weeks from now Old Home Week will be in full swing.

Organizers are putting the final touches on plans for the 40th Triennial celebration, which will be held from Saturday, Aug. 3, to Saturday, Aug. 10.

Badges are already for sale at a number of local businesses and sales will continue at Old Home Week headquarters, opening Aug. 2 in the Growing With Music space on the northwest quadrant of Center Square.

The $6 badge is good for admission throughout Old Home Week. The badge highlights the springhouse at Ebbert Spring Archaeological Preserve and Heritage Park because the grand opening of the site will take place during Old Home Week, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3. It features walking trails through 10,000 years of local history with interpretive kiosks placed along the way.

Andy Everetts is president of the 40th Triennial, which has its roots in the Old Boys' Reunion organized in 1902 by Philip Baer.

"Honor the past, encourage the present and grow the future," is Everetts' theme for the week as he's guided some 40 committees over the past year. The committees run the alphabetical spectrum from alumni reunion to window displays.

The week is jammed packed with activities for all ages, including daily Music on the Square and concerts in the park.

Some of the highlights include Fred Kaley Memorial Run, the official opening, Martin's Mill Bridge drive-throughs and a motorcycle show on Saturday, Aug. 3.

Sunday features a car show and a musical community worship event then Music on the Square leading up to the unofficial opening beginning at 11 p.m.

Reminiscing sessions, a town and township tour and the G-A Lioness Club flower show are on the schedule Monday.

Reminiscing and the flower show continue Tuesday, which also will see the Loyal Daughters' "Honoring Nursing" program and the first performance of the pageant "Hometown Memories."

A walking tour, the official Old Home Week photo, bicycle races and the second night of the pageant are on the agenda for Wednesday.

Thursday starts with a "Fun" Dog Show, followed by an afternoon ribbon-cutting at Lilian S. Besore Memorial Library's new courtyard and headlined by the Old Home Week parade at 6 p.m.

The Greencastle-Antrim Women's Fellowship will host a morning of music on Friday and there will be a Fun Fair in the Park in the afternoon. A concert by the U.S. Navy Band Country Current at 7:30 leads into the Old Home Week fireworks display at dusk.

The celebration winds down Saturday, with the official closing planned that evening on the square.
