Missing man's body found near Mercersburg

MERCERSBURG — Pennsylvania State Police said the body of a missing 51-year-old man was recovered Thursday morning in the area of the 10000 block of Knob Road near Mercersburg.

Police identified the body as Gregory A. Cole, who has been missing since Sunday afternoon.

At approximately 8:40 a.m. Thursday, Cole was located, deceased, in a nearby pond and was recovered, according to police. An autopsy is pending and the investigation into Cole's death is ongoing.

Cole was reported missing around 12:30 p.m. Sunday, May 5 in the 10000 block of Knob Road in Montgomery Township. Police said he went missing under unknown circumstances.

Crews were searching the area since, using divers, K-9 units and other assets, police said.

Cole coached the Greencastle-Antrim High School girls' varsity soccer program for eight seasons, stepping down after the 2016 campaign. He was at the helm of G-A's District 3 championship run in 2014.

Cole worked for the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. The department issued the following statement:

"It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we share with you the untimely death of Captain Gregory Cole. Please keep Captain Cole's family, friends and coworkers in your thoughts and prayers."
