Seventy-nine pounds of unwanted medications recently was sent for disposal from the blue collection box in the lobby of the Greencastle police station.

"Seventy-nine pounds is a lot of pills that would have gone into the sewer," Police Chief John Phillippy reported at last week's borough council meeting.

A medication box has been housed at the police station for about three years and 79 pounds is about average for two months, according to the chief.

Instead of ending up in the Chesapeake Bay or the wrong hands, the drugs are properly incinerated.

Unwanted medications can be dropped off any time the police station is open. In addition, the station houses a "sharps" collection for needles.
