Bras for a Cause has returned to Greencastle for a second time during Breast Cancer Awareness Month and this year not only are bras being collected in Greencastle, some will be distributed here, too.

The October effort coordinated by friends Rhonda McFarland and Carol MacDougall of Waynesboro raises money for Cumberland Valley Breast Care Alliance while providing bras for women in the community.

Gayle Peterson started the collection in Frederick four years ago and Peterson's Carpet and Flooring continues to be a drop-off location.

McFarland got involved after hearing a friend recently diagnosed with breast cancer talk about how it was nice to have help with cleaning the house or paying for gas with a gift card provided by the alliance.

MacDougall is a breast cancer survivor.

They've collected in excess of 3,000 new and gently used bras and raised over $3,000. Sponsors agree to donate $1 a bra up to a certain amount.

Sponsors this year are Savage Pharmacy, the Crouse team at Merrill Lynch, Michael Cermak of Cermak Technologies, Craig Friedly Potter and Moore Insurance, Dr. and Mrs. Kirk Zeger and the Waynesboro Area Lioness/Lions Club.

Dr. Kirk Zeger and his wife and office manager, Leigh Ann, joined the list of sponsors and collection sites last year. If the office wasn't open, people would hang bras on their doorknob and the undergarments continued to come in after the collection period ended.

Leigh Ann Zeger has ordered pink T-shirts bearing breast cancer awareness information for the ladies in the office, has information posted in all the exam rooms, is giving bracelets to patients and has posted information on Facebook.

"It affects everyone, everywhere, too much," she said. "If we can use our business like this, why not?"

The bras collected have traditionally been donated to Waynesboro Human and Community Services, but this year some also will be given to Grace's Closet at Grace United Church of Christ in Greencastle.

In addition to the Zeger dental office in Greencastle and Peterson's Carpet and Flooring in Hagerstown, collection sites are:

  • Waynesboro Area YMCA
  • Savage Pharmacy in Waynesboro
  • Volunteer office at Waynesboro Hospital
  • New Reflections Hair Salon in Waynesboro
  • Stampin Up, Jody Brechbill, in Duffield
  • Rhonda Brake Shreiner Women's Center in Chambersburg
  • Olde Town Touch in Hagerstown
