Join the annual G-A Race for Education
Volunteers with the PTO for Greencastle-Antrim Elementary and Primary schools recently prepared more than 22,000 yellow fliers that went to the post office on Sept. 21 in preparation for the annual Race for Education on Friday, Oct. 12.
The Race for Education raises money for field trips, school-wide assemblies, PTO sponsored-events, classroom grants and other educational needs for the over 1,400 Greencastle-Antrim students in kindergarten through fifth-grade, according to Holly Kendall, vice president of the PTO and Race for Education Committee chair.
In the previous six years, the PTO has been able to purchase additional items that the district budget could not cover, like a security fence for the primary playground, additional iPads and desktops for the classrooms, a new stage along with audio/visual equipment for the elementary school and enlarged playground area.
The Race for Education is held in lieu of multiple fundraisers, such as product sales, throughout the school year.
The fliers were sent to family and friends of the Greencastle-Antrim School District asking for sponsorship of Greencastle-Antrim students as they “Race for Education” on the school track from 8:45 to 11:45 a.m. on Oct. 12.
In the first year, 15,000 fliers were mailed and the first Race for Education raised over $90,000. Each subsequent year, students have supplied more names of family and friends to mail fliers to. Last year, over 22,000 fliers were sent out and the PTO received $110,000 in donations from families and community.
This year, the students turned in a new record of almost 23,000 address labels for the fliers and the goal is $85,000.
