Matthew Smith of Greencastle, bicycling to Las Vegas, enters New Mexico.

Greencastle Borough Councilman Matthew Smith is raising money and awareness for the child abuse prevention organization Blue Ribbons 4 Justice during a three-week bicycle ride from Greencastle to Las Vegas. He left town on Oct. 15 and his travels can be tracked through his feed on Facebook. Here’s what he wrote from the road Wednesday morning:

As week three is in full swing it is hard to believe that West Virginia was weeks ago. I never would have imagined this trip would be so trying, even though maybe I should have. With just a few days left, I'm starting to get excited to get home and back to wonderful PA — even looking forward to getting back to work!

The weather I have encountered has been terrible. The last week has been full of winds and cold weather, which has added to the fun since I have been sick for the better part of the week.

I have such a great core of family and friends that gives me daily encouragement and support, which has been amazing because there have been times it would have been easier to just throw in the towel.

Blueribbons4justice has been great, they have called and checked in on a daily basis. I hope this trip really helps with their mission to help prevent child abuse.

I'm currently in New Mexico and am hoping to be done by Sunday or Monday at the latest. It has been and amazing trip, but I'm ready for it to be over and life to get back to normal.
