Kickoff planned for 24th Relay for Life
The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Greencastle is kicking off its 24th year of raising money in the fight against cancer and is seeking new teams to join with its 53 returning teams for the family-oriented community event.
The 2018 kickoff will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at 6:30 p.m. at the Greencastle Rescue Hose Co., 842 S. Washington St. The Relay For Life of Greencastle is scheduled for May 18 and 19 at the Greencastle-Antrim High School’s Kaley Field.
According to Kim Muller, an event leader, there will be several announcements at the kickoff, including the theme for 2018. The theme will be used to inspire camp decorating and a number of new or updated portions of the Relay.
“We’ve been Relaying since 1995 and each year we try to incorporate something new to continue to make Relay the unique event that it is,” Muller said. “Teams can look forward to some lively additions this year. Our team captains and team members are so committed year-round to raising money for cancer research and services that we want to honor their hard work with an event that provides a good balance of celebration and times for reflection. And we always want to recognize the difference that they are making in the lives of those touched by cancer.
“The American Cancer Society offers guidelines for Relay For Life events, but each event puts their personal stamp on their event. We are so fortunate to have teams who were a part of the first Relay in 1995, along with teams formed more recently who bring their own passion to finish this fight against cancer.” Muller added. “We hope that anyone who would like to form a team and become a part of this life-affirming event will come to the kickoff and see what Relay is all about. We’re also hoping that our returning teams will turn out to hear what’s new for 2018.”
Relay For Life is a fundraising event where team members take turns walking around a track or designated path. Each event is six to 24 hours in length and each team is asked to have a member on the track at all times to signify that cancer never sleeps. Cancer patients don't stop because they're tired, and for one night, neither do Relayers.
