Bras for a Cause can be donated Greencastle
Bras for a Cause is expanding into Greencastle this year, with sponsorship and a collection basket in the dental office of Dr. Kirk Zeger at 110 E. Franklin St.
Last year’s effort in Waynesboro saw 1,056 bras donated while raising money for Cumberland Valley Breast Care Alliance. Sponsors pledge a certain amount for each bra donated, according to Rhonda McFarland, co-organizer of Bras for a Cause with Carol MacDougall. McFarland is a thyroid cancer survivor and MacDougall is a breast cancer survivor.
Sponsors so far this year are Savage Pharmacy, Waynesboro Area Lioness Lions Club, Rebekah and Kirk Crouse at Merrill Lynch and Dr. Kirk and Leigh Ann Zeger.
The bras will be given to Waynesboro Community and Human Services and several other local agencies.
McFarland and MacDougall are working with Sharon Brosius of Cumberland Valley Breast Care Alliance. The non-profit ministry is in its 21st year of helping local breast cancer patients. The money will be used to assist them with everyday expenses through gift cards, gas cards and help with utility bills.
“It’s a good cause,” Zeger said.
The idea of Bras for a Cause germinated for McFarland when a friend was diagnosed with breast cancer and they talked about who helps with things like meals, money and cleaning the house.
In addition to Zeger’s dental office, new or gently used bras can be donated throughout October — Breast Cancer Awareness Month — at the volunteer office at Waynesboro Hospital, the Waynesboro Area YMCA, Savage Pharmacy and New Reflections Hair Salon, all in Waynesboro, the Rhonda Brake Shreiner Breast Center in Chambersburg and Jody Brechbill’s Stampin Up in Fayetteville. A collection basket will be in the Waynesboro Lioness Lions tent during Market Day on Saturday, Oct. 6.
