Fund drive under way for Jerome R. King Playground
The annual fund drive for Jerome R. King Playground started on April 24.
“Each year we strive to make improvements to our facilities and play equipment and explore ways to improve the park for the public’s enjoyment,” according to the fund-raising letter from the board of directors.
The fund drive is 75 percent of the playground’s annual income and $20,000 would be consider successful, said Lon Barkdoll, board chairman. The park also receives money from the Borough of Greencastle and Antrim Township.
Barkdoll noted that the fund drive mailing list was cut down considerably this year to be cost efficient.
“If you didn’t get a letter, still please contribute,” he said.
Money from last year’s fund drive was used to repair and repaint the baseball grandstand, paint the VFW bandshell, restore a 1914 fountain that was rededicated during Old Home Week and purchase and install six new children’s swings.
This year the big projects planned at the playground are painting and repairing pavilions, relining the basketball courts and placing new fencing around the play area.
“The playground is approximately 15 acres in size,” according to the letter from the board. “As you can imagine, maintaining and improving this beautiful space does require a substantial financial commitment from the community. Many hours of volunteer labor keep the playground a clean, pleasant, and safe place for all to enjoy. Each year we rely on your generous financial support to keep this park a real community asset and something of which we can all be proud.”
In addition, a new website (jeromekingplayground.com) should be up and running around Aug. 1 and the annual Fun Day at the park is planned from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 19.
“We get a lot of compliments about the park,” Barkdoll said.
