Greencastle Church of the Brethren is planning two fundraisers to help a young couple whose lives were changed forever by a motorcycle accident on June 15, 2012, a little more than a month after they were married.

Individuals, churches, organizations and businesses are coming together in the D and D Project to help Dean and Dannielle Shenberger by building an addition on their Mercersburg area home. Any money raised above project expenses will go to ongoing support of the Shenbergers.

*** About the couple ***

The Shenbergers were married on May 5, 2012. On June 15, Dean was in a motorcycle accident on Warm Spring Road. He suffered a cracked skull, a traumatic brain injury and numerous broken bones, was flown to York Hospital and was not expected to survive.

"Dean miraculously survived, but now has extensive handicaps as a result of the traumatic brain injury," according to a flier from the church that says he is totally blind, paralyzed on the left side and needs help with all aspects of daily life. "Dannielle has a strong faith and continues praying that more healing will come."

The Shenbergers live in a house that does not have a handicapped accessible bathroom and needs more space to accommodate medical equipment for his care and rehabilitation.

Their insurance policy only covered catastrophic medical fees and not specialized physical therapy, equipment or home renovations, according to the flier.

Donations may be made directly to the D and D Project with checks payable to Mercersburg Mennonite Church, 10060 Buchanan Trail West, Mercersburg, PA 17236, attention Linda Horst.
