Greencastle-Antrim School District Business Manager Richard Lipella asked the school board's thoughts Nov. 5 on raising taxes above the index for 2010-2011. According to the formula, the limit was 3.2 mills. If the levy went higher, the board needed public approval. He thought revenue would be close to budget but it was too early to look at expenses.

In general board members agreed the economy would still be a burden to property owners next year. Board member Arnie Jansen suggested that in the future the board receive a projected budget to aid in the decision.

Lipella said if the district stayed within the index cap, "We'll have to look at many things differently next year than we have before."

Board member William Thorne was adamant that the tax increase not go over. "We have to find a way to live within our means."

The board has until January to decide the direction it will take.
