Driver charged in fatal June crash
The traffic accident that claimed the life of a Greencastle teen in June has drawn charges, including involuntary manslaughter and homicide by vehicle, against the driver in the crash.
Alexx E. Sheffield, 19, of 1402 Buchanan Trail West, Mercersburg, was charged Thursday and taken into custody by Pennsylvania State Police. He was placed in the Franklin County Jail in lieu of $300,000 bond.
Police said Sheffield was the driver of a Ford Mustang that went out of control on Lemar Road in Peters Township and struck a utility pole around 11 p.m. Saturday, June 1.
Passenger Marita Logan Shaffer, 18, died June 5 in the York Hospital, where she was taken by rescue crews following the Upton crash. Four other teens were passengers, according to police. Two were from Greencastle, Willard Massie, 18, and a 15-year-old girl. The four, along with Sheffield, were all injured.
Shaffer died just days before her graduation with the Greencastle-Antrim High School Class of 2013.
Police initially said speed was a factor in the crash.
Sheffield was charged with involuntary manslaughter, homicide by vehicle, aggravated assault by vehicle, accident involving death/injury while not properly licensed, five counts of recklessly endangering another person, in addition to various traffic offenses. He was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Glenn Manns. A preliminary hearing is scheduled Nov. 14.
