Waynesboro Community and Human Services is helping to prepare students in the Waynesboro and Greencastle school districts to head back to school with all the supplies they need for a successful year.

According to Denise Esser, director of WCHS, they will be doing a curbside distribution on Aug. 16 and 17 from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. to eligible families in the two school districts using the provided school supplies lists at their 123 Walnut St. to any family who presents a need.

Waynesboro Community and Human Services is located on Walnut Street in Waynesboro.

“This prepares the students for school, our goal is that this will make them feel well prepared going back to school with all the essential things,” Esser said. “For parents and caregivers, it’s a relief for them to not have to worry about whether to get school supplies or pay their rent that month.”

Esser said that the backpack program serves over 300 students a year.

To assist in fulfilling this need, WCHS is accepting donations of new school supplies. Items include pencils, pens, binders, erasers, crayons, highlighters, backpacks, earbuds, calculators, rulers, sticky notes, glue sticks, wide ruled notebook paper and lanyards.

“All of the items will be put into a backpack and will be picked up from the families,” Esser said. “We hope we’re bringing some excitement to the students as they prepare to go back to school.”

In addition to the supplies, WCHS is also holding a shopping time specific to back to school on Aug. 19 and 20 from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m.

“We will close the clothing bank to the public so that we can set up appointments for school families to do some shopping,” Esser said. “This is a great way for them to get a few new outfits for the year.”

Donations of new or gently used clothing for back to school are also being accepted at this time.
