A Greencastle man was stabbed multiple times early Wednesday morning at a Greencastle motel and his alleged assailant has been charged with attempted homicide.

Michael Proffitt, 50, was stabbed repeatedly in the chest with a five-bladed knife during the 4:43 a.m. assault June 8 at 671 E. Baltimore St. Police did not name the location of the assault, but the address corresponds to the Green Motel located near Exit 5 of Interstate 81. It was formerly called the Castle Green Motel.

Proffitt was taken by Rescue Hose Co. EMS to Meritus Medical Center for what Greencastle police said were “non-life threatening” injuries. In addition to the chest wounds, Proffitt also sustained injuries to his hand.

Police have charged Tyler Kauffman, 23, of 3148 Lincoln Way East, Fayetteville, with criminal attempt to commit homicide, aggravated assault and burglary.

Kauffman is being held in the Franklin County Jail following an arraignment.

According to Greencastle Police, Kauffman had gone to the room of Proffitt and engaged in an altercation. Police said Kauffman pulled a five-bladed knife and stabbed him in the chest repeatedly. Both Proffitt and Kauffman had knife wounds when police arrived.

Kauffman was taken into custody at the scene and treated at the Chambersburg Hospital.

Waynesboro Police and Pennsylvania State Police assisted at the scene.
