Greencastle-Antrim athletes are making noise in the postseason.

Track and field

Taylor Kirkpatrick and Nikki Garns each punched a ticket to the PIAA State Track and Field Championships over the weekend during the District 3-AAA Championship at Shippensburg University. Kirkpatrick will compete in the high jump and Garns in the 400.

Kirkpatrick used the district meet to equal his best of the season, leaping a 6-4 height and a tie for fourth. Garns shined as well on the big stage, eclipsing her school record in the 400, charging the oval in 58.62. Her fifth place and her time qualified her for states.

Blue Devil athletes collected district medals in two other events. The 400 meter boys’ relay team placed seventh and agonizingly close to state qualification. Devin Statler, Eli Bock, Austin Scott and Kirkpatrick closed a 43.43, just three-one-hundreths of a second off the state qualifying standard. Garns was also in a successful relay, joining with Jane Herman, Shelby Stouffer and Lauren Powers in the 3200 where they claimed eighth in 9:43.

Other G-A performers included Caroline Schemel with a 10th in the 3200 meters, Scott with a 10th in the long jump and David Spinder with 14th in the shot put. Scott also ran a personal best in the 200 at 22.78 despite not advancing to the final.

Senior Ashton Rockwell didn’t advance to the finals of the 100 hurdles, but she still went out with a bang by breaking the school record in a time of 15.72.

The PIAA State Championships are set for Friday and Saturday back at Shippensburg University.

After finishing the season with a 6-0 shutout of Boiling Springs, the Blue Devil baseball team claimed the 13th seed into the District 3-AAA playoffs. That pitted the local team against fourth-seeded Lancaster Catholic. G-A not only had to play a 19-3 team, but had to do it in the Crusaders’ back yard. After falling behind 5-1 in the opening inning, G-A staged a comeback and rode the arm of Ryan Ricci to a 9-6 win.

The Devils will face 20-3 Oley Valley Thursday in the district quarterfinals. The game is set for 4 p.m. at Carlisle High School.

Before starting its district play, the Blue Devil softball team took its place in the Mid-Penn Conference Championships representing the Colonial Division. G-A ended up sharing the division title with James Buchanan, forcing a one-game playoff to determine the Colonial entry into the conference event.

The Devils scored all seven runs of a 7-0 game in the fifth inning to bypass Buchanan. G-A was paired with Cumberland Valley in the tourney. CV scored three runs in the first and that’s where the game stayed through six innings when darkness ended the action at 3-0.

On Tuesday G-A took its third seed standing in the District 3-AAA Tournament against 14th seed Middletown and delivered a 7-2 victory to advance to the quarterfinal round. The Devils will match up against Kennard-Dale in that round Thursday.

All District 3 meets/tournaments have an admission charge of $6 for adults and $4 for students.  No passes will be accepted at any site.  There are no noise makers, banners, hand-held signs, or sirens permitted at any contests.
