5 things to know about Electoral College vote changes
The 2010 census changed the political map a little bit by reapportioning votes. Here are five things to know:
1. Eight states gained votes. They are Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, South Carolina, Texas, Utah and Washington.
2. Texas – which already had the second most electoral votes – gained the most (four) and now has a 38 votes. California has 55. By comparison, some states have only three electoral votes.
3. Ten states lost votes: Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
4. Ohio and New York lost the most – two.
5. If the nation votes this year as it did in 2008, the change in electoral votes would mean a gain of four votes for the Republican candidate, Mitt Romney.
