A number of recreational areas used by the youth of the Greencastle-Antrim community will get needed work with the township grants.

The 2012 round of park grants have been approved by the Antrim Township Board of Supervisors. The board, following the recommendations of the Park Committee, awarded $32,000 to eight organizations.

The grant amounts and recipients were: Kauffman Ruritan Community Center, $6,050 for a 60-inch mower and ballfield infield mix; Shady Grove Improvement Association, $10,000 for driveway and parking lot improvements; Jerome R. King Playground Association, $5,000 for renovations and upgrades to the restroom; Greencastle-Antrim Baseball/Softball Association, $2,500 to repair bleachers; State Line Youth League, $400 for ballfield dirt; State Line Ruritan Club, $1,350 for chemical application and painting playground equipment; Greencastle YMCA, $1,715 to offset scholarship and program loss; and Greencastle Antrim Ladies Softball at Shady Grove, $4,985 for regrading fields, and maintenance- and field playing equipment.

The groups had originally requested $66,830.

Supervisor Pat Heraty liked the distribution of the available funds on April 24. "This list favors the spirit of the grants, which is service organizations rather than organized sports."
