OBITUARY: James H. “Jim” Barnhart

James H. “Jim” Barnhart, 82, of Moss Spring Avenue, Greencastle, died April 6, 2012, at Laurel Run Nursing Home, Fayetteville, following a short illness.

Born June 11, 1929 in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late C.P. (Jim) and Martha (Peters) Barnhart.

Jim graduated from Greencastle High School with the Class of 1947, and went on to earn a degree from Hagerstown Business College.

He served in the United States Army.

Jim and his wife, Janet (Horst) Keener Barnhart, lived in Greencastle on Moss Spring Avenue.  Jim and his first wife (of 53 years), Almeda M. (Martin) Barnhart, deceased August 2005, lived over 50 years in the home they built on Bemisderfer Road.

Jim was employed as General Manager by Hicks Chevrolet, where he worked for 40 years, retiring in 1999.

He was a member of Grace United Church of Christ, Greencastle, where he served in many capacities, including treasurer and on the consistory. He was also a member of Greencastle Lions Club, Mason Dixon Camping Club, a life member of Greencastle Rescue Hose Company and served on the Greencastle-Antrim School Board. Most recently he volunteered at Book Savers in Hagerstown, Md.

Jim was an active supporter of Greencastle-Antrim High School sports, with regular attendance at football, basketball, and baseball games and many other events.

He took great pleasure in woodworking, using his skills to build handmade furniture for each of his children. Spending time with his family was what he enjoyed most.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Deborah Homer, wife of Tony, Greencastle, Carolyn Shoemaker, wife of Barry, Greencastle, Pat Barnhart, companion of Craig Schneider, Jupiter, Fla. and Teresa McCauley, companion of Tim Myers, Greencastle; one son, David Barnhart, husband of Sherry, St. Thomas; two stepsons, Douglas Keener, husband of Carol, State Line, and Carl Keener, husband of Cindy Keener, State Line; three step-daughters, Sue Bender, wife of Dale, Greencastle, Joy Martin, wife of Delray, Scotland, and Renae Taglang, wife of James, Clay Hill; seven grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Jack Barnhart.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, at Grace United Church of Christ, 128 E. Baltimore St. Greencastle, with Rev. James Hughes and Pastor Steve Fretz officiating.

Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, in Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St. Greencastle, and also one hour prior to the service at the church.
