Give blood, chance to win amusement park tickets
A blood drive scheduled in Greencastle on the Memorial Day holiday will provide donors the chance to win tickets to an amusement park.
From 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, May 30, donors may give blood at the First Assembly of God Church, 525 E. Leitersburg St.
The local drive will be part of a Greater Alleghenies Region of the Red Cross promotion which will feature a drawing for two tickets to an amusement park of the winner’s choice. Drawing winners can select from among Cedar Point (Ohio), Hershey Park, Idlewild Park, Kennywood Park, Kings Dominion (Va.) and Kings Island (Ohio).
Winners will be notified the first full week of June.
According to John Hagins, CEO, travel and other holiday activities can strain blood supplies in two ways, through an increased risk for accidents and decreased donor turnout.
“Every two seconds someone in our country needs a blood transfusion, and these needs continue 365 days a year,” he stated. “So those who give up part of their holiday to help patients in need have a chance to take a holiday on us later this summer.”
There is another blood drive in the area Monday, Memorial Day, which will also be part of the amusement park promotion. It will run from 9:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the American Red Cross, Blood Donor Center, 1131 Conrad Court, Hagerstown, Md.
Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in Pennsylvania), meet height and weight requirements (at least 110 pounds based on height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. Bring Red Cross blood donor card or other form of positive ID when donating.
Those with specific eligibility questions should call the Red Cross Donor Client Support Center at 1-866-236-3276. Many donors are eligible to give blood every 56 days.
