The Pennsylvania Senate has confirmed Chambersburg resident John Wetzel to head the state Department of Corrections. Wetzel, who served as warden of the Franklin County Jail since 2002 and as a member of the state Board of Pardons since 2007, will oversee a department with a budget of nearly $2 billion and more than 16,000 employees.

Senator Richard Alloway II (R-33) applauded the confirmation.

“Secretary Wetzel will bring a great deal of experience to the position, and I am confident he will serve as an effective leader of the Department of Corrections,” Alloway said.

“I am very pleased with Secretary Wetzel's confirmation by the Senate, and I look forward to working with him in the future to improve Department operations and cut prison costs.”
