The entrance to the Greencastle post office is different than it was for years, and the change is permanent. In the past customers could walk up the ramp along the building, or take one step from the sidewalk directly in front of the door. Last August the railing was damaged from an automobile accident during Old Home Week. The USPS replaced it with a continuous piece, eliminating the shortest access to the door. A spokesman said too many people were tripping on the step and their safety was taken into consideration. The ramp PennDOT installed at the curb last fall, as it upgraded corners of the intersection, was ADA-compliant, but a little steeper than borough officials liked. The crew returned last week to take out a section of concrete and replace it with another at just a two-to-three percent grade.
