Waynesboro youths charged in attack on G-A mascot “Blue”

“Blue” took an took an unexpected one for the team last week.
The mascot for the Greencastle-Antrim High School athletic teams was injured when student spectators from the opposing team approached him on the home floor during a game Friday night, tackled him, knocking off the costume head. Greencastle Police reported that the high school student in costume fell to the ground. He received an injury to his face.
Police said Monday that they filed charges against two Waynesboro youths in connection with the attack that was witnessed by some of the spectators attending the game between the Blue Devil varsity boys’ basketball team and the visiting Waynesboro Indians Jan. 14. Witnesses said school officials and at least one G-AHS student chased the suspects.
Greencastle police were called to the school with the report of a fight. Their investigation revealed that two boys from Waynesboro, ages 16 and 17, were involved. At 8:12 p.m. one lured “Blue” to the location of the second suspect where the attack ensued.
The two Waynesboro youths were charged with simple assault and criminal conspiracy/simple assault through the Franklin County Juvenile Probation Department.
In addition to acting at the mascot for athletic contests, “Blue” appears at some other school district events.
