The CVSM Community Symphonic Band is accepting new members who are interested in performing in a concert to be held Jan. 30.  The program for the concert will include classical, musical theater, jazz, marches, and traditional concert band music.

Led by Tim Gotwald, the CVSM Community Symphonic Band maintains an active member list of nearly 100 musicians, and anyone who can read and perform graded band music at Level III or IV (high school level) is invited to participate.

Rehearsals are scheduled for Sunday afternoons 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 16 and 23 in the Chambersburg Area Middle School (CAMS) Band Room. The concert is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30 in the CAMS auditorium.  Participation in the band and attendance at the concert are both free.

Tim Gotwald recently retired from the Chambersburg Area School District after 37 years of service.  He taught both elementary music and was the CASHS band director. He is an accomplished flutist and saxophonist and plays regularly with the Hagerstown Municipal Band, the CVSM Jazz Quartet, CVSM Concert Jazz Band, Mercersburg Community Chorus orchestra, Buzz Jones Big Band, and other ensembles. He holds a BS in Music Education from Susquehanna University.

The CVSM Community Band was formed in 1993 in response to numerous requests for performance opportunities by area musicians.  Rehearsals were scheduled with a limited commitment in mind to attract musicians who did not wish to be tied down to year-round weekly rehearsals, concerts, and parades.  Therefore, the band rehearses only three times before a performance.  The name was changed to the CVSM Community Symphonic Band several years ago to better reflect the band’s repertoire, which differs from many other community bands through its diversity and emphasis on concert band music.
