Madison Street upgrade project begins in Greencastle

Work is underway on a total overhaul of Madison Street.

There’s even more activity that usual on Madison Street in Greencastle these days. Work is underway on the revamping of Madison Street.

Several projects will be completed in step by step fashion so that one entity does not interfere with the work of another. Columbia Gas started a few weeks ago. It is putting new gas lines on the north side of the street from Carlisle Street to Spring Grove Avenue, and laterals to connect to the south side. The two-inch plastic lines will be buried between the curb and sidewalk when possible. If Columbia has to disturb existing sidewalk, it will replace the concrete. The utility company will also install outside meters on the residences. The next step will find the Borough of Greencastle creating a stormwater management system from Washington Street to Carl Avenue, and new water mains from Linden Avenue to Jefferson Street. Manager Kenneth Womack said residents would be invited to another neighborhood meeting, similar to one held last June, sometime in January for updates on the project and their responsibilities. The property owners will need to have curbs in place by Sept. 1, but sidewalks could be done later. Madison Street will get a base coat in the fall, and the final paving in 2012.
