Y to open Before and After School CARE

A before and after school childcare center will open in Greencastle this fall, and enrollments are now being taken. The facility will cater to children in primary and elementary school.

The Waynesboro YMCA will host an open house from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19 at First Assembly of God Church in Greencastle. The church, across the street from Greencastle-Antrim Elementary School, will house the center.

"We recognized the need for quality care in the area," said Tanja Koons, YMCA Childcare Director. "We surveyed the school system, getting a list of names of interested people. We hope to have at least 24 children to get started, but can handle more."

The program will begin Monday, Aug. 30, the first day of classes for students, and end the last day of school. The hours of operation are 6:30 a.m. to the start of school, and after school to 6 p.m.

"Character values and Bible lessons are an important part of our weekly activities," said Koons, who oversees similar programs in Waynesboro. "We encourage responsibility, caring, respect and honesty in all of our children."

As well as a safe place for children to go, the programs include an opportunity to participate in games, tutoring, crafts and more.

A School's Out Club will also be available when G-A schools are closed. There will be all day activities from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. It will offer some field trips in the Greencastle area.

The Y will also provide a Snow Day Club for children enrolled in Before/After School CARE or the School's Out Club. The Snow Day Club will run during inclement weather when schools are closed. However, if the YMCA is closed the Snow Day Club is also closed.

The Greencastle programs are licensed by the Department of Public Welfare and will have a 1:12 teacher, child ratio. The site director has a college degree in a human services-related field and at least two years of experience. The supervisor has a bachelor's or associate's degree, and the assistants a high school degree and a minimum of two years experience with children.

During the open house parents and children may register, meet the staff, tour the facility and learn about the program. For information, contact Koons at 762-6012 or visit the Web site waynesboroymca.org
