Scout wants to make Besore patio user-friendly

Tyler Douglas, who has been Scouting since first grade, wants to make outdoor furniture for the Besore Memorial Library patio.

Tyler Douglas hopes the public is as excited about his Eagle Scout project as he is. With the Lilian S. Besore Memorial Library expansion project winding down, one feature would complete the package.

Tyler, 14, a member of Boy Scout Troop 99, plans to construct two 2-person picnic tables and two side-by-side Adirondack chair units for the patio on the west side of the building. Visitors will be able to relax at any time, and also log onto free wifi.

Tyler estimates the materials will cost $1,750, more than needed for most Eagle Scout projects. He will use a high density plastic that looks like wood. It will not require much maintenance.

The son of Steven and Lisa Douglas, Tyler has been a long-time patron of the library, and helped with moving books during renovations. When he learned that the Besore Association would appreciate someone building the patio furniture, he volunteered.

“I jumped at the opportunity,” Tyler said. “I don’t think any other Eagle projects have been done here.”

He will ask businesses for financial support, and hold fundraisers on his own. He hopes to have the money by spring, so the work gets done by the time the weather is warm enough for outdoor seating.

Other Scouts will help Tyler with the labor, as well as adults.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the project may send a check to Troop 99, c/o Tyler Douglas, 11768 Carol Ave., Greencastle PA 17225.
