Groundbreaking for the Lilian S. Besore Memorial Library expanåçsion is set for 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30. Construction will begin the following Monday. Capital Campaign Committee chairman Patti Divelbiss and Besore Association board president Kay Witmer made the announcement Nov. 5 after borough council cleared the final hoop to starting Phase I.

The council approved the land development plan submitted by Frederick, Seibert and Associates. Prior to that, the Greencastle Zoning Hearing Board approved the non-conforming use of the addition in an already non-conforming structure on Oct. 25. Attorney Ed Wine represented the board at the meeting. The plan did not face any opposition, other than a few questions from a resident on traffic and parking.

"He concluded the expansion was a good thing," Wine said.

On Oct. 31 the Greencastle Planning and Zoning Commission gave input, approving the plans which the Besore board unanimously adopted the same night. Those members included Witmer, Wine as vice president, Sue Frederick as secretary, Bud O'Mara as treasurer, Bill Needy, Brittny Paci and Glenn Knepper.

"We're excited," said Wine. "It's been a long process to finally move ahead. The Capital Campaign committee has done a tremendous job with fundraising."

The committee reached the halfway mark of its $1.2 million goal. Over $630,000 has been donated or pledged for the 3,500 square-foot addition. It will include a children's room, an upgraded HVAC system, handicap accesible bathrooms, a lift and roof repairs.

Phase 2 will address carpeting, windows, and establishing a maintenance fund for ongoing costs in the 1963 building, and its 2013 counterpart.
